Age: IT'S COMPLICATED physically he's 38 but technically he's 45
Canon Point: Februaryish 2018, super after Hollowend (which happens in March 2016)
Appearance: 6'1, looks like this but is usually more ominous, and also he's a zombie right now so he looks a little gross. The zombie part isn't too bad; mostly his skin is just grayer than it should be, and he looks/feels kind of... dry. The gross part is that his throat has been split open vertically on the left side, all the way from his jawbone to his collarbone. He can, uh, make gross congealed blood spurt out of the wound if he wants to. Usually he keeps the wound stitched up but that can get uncomfortable so NOT TODAY. Other than that, he's wearing a button-up gray shirt with a white A shirt underneath, jeans, idk some boring undies, argyle socks bc fancy zombie, and boots.
Personality: deadpan but a lil snarky and also this
Backstory: So James is a serial killer (sorry, everyone) and his whole schtick is garroting people. His murdering isn't as Complicated as Harlan's; he just like abducts homeless people, murders the crap out of them, and then cuts 'em up and dumps the pieces-parts in the mountains. He's been doing this for A While, so overall he has 42 kills under his belt.
James is a correctional psychiatrist, so his patients are all inmates and he also researches like, serial killer psychology and that sort of thing. Which is gr8 bc he is also a serial killer lololol. That's how he got into the field, p much, like on some level he wants to better understand his own psychopathy and murderous urges. Also, it's fun. Before Harlan showed up, James had been happily going about his business undetected since he's really good at covering his tracks (he gets a lot of A++ tips from his patients and from getting a behind the scenes look at the legal system heyooo). He lived in Colorado Springs and bounced between a lot of the major prisons in that area, including ADX Florence, which is like, The Prison.
tl;dr: James was doing his murderer thing, Harlan tracked him down, Harlan was like hey hottie hey, they were "together???" for a bit until shit went south and Harlan killed him. James revives and spends the next few years getting his shit together, which leads to him tracking down Harlan so Harlan can help him remember what the fuck his deal was in his old life.
Notable Traits: - actually a psychopath.
- super good at reading people. he's not like sherlock holmes level or anything but he's particularly good at reading body language and mental states.
- his voice is a little hoarse bc of the whole neck wound thing.
- literally a zombie, which pretty much means he's a corpse possessed by a ghost and the corpse won't rot while he's possessing it. he can make his body work like normal when he wants to, like he can make his heart beat and he can digest food and stuff, but it's all voluntary, nothing just happens on its own. canonically, the only way to kill him would be to destroy his brain (also destroying the whole body would do, but that's... harder), but for our purposes here, he can be killed like normal. also, his body can't regenerate, so any injuries would be permanent but they also wouldn't really hurt him. more on that in a new thing since it's Important...
- he sort of can't feel pain. technically he can but in the same way that he can make his heart beat, like he has to actively focus on making his nerves work in order to feel anything. he pretty much always has his nerves turned on because navigating through the world with zero sensation at all is basically playing QWOP, but he can shut them off too if he doesn't feel like, uh, feeling. granted this works in accordance to an actual nervous system, like he couldn't shut off feeling in his shoulder without also losing feeling in his arm.
Starting Inventory: - just normal pocket stuff idk nothing special
